Wednesday, April 7, 2010 Every month, The Writer Magazine spotlights a literary journal of note, giving readers a taste of its tone and contributors. The current issue (coverdated May 2010, available now) takes a look at The Cincinnati Review. Nicola Mason was kind enough to mention my upcoming story in the article, which begins:
One day, Nicola Mason, managing editor of The Cincinnati Review, overheard the journal's staff discussing a story that had worked its way through the reading tiers. They spoke eagerly about the protagonist--a talking gorilla who works in human resources. Mason thought, "OK, fun but silly idea." Then the story appeared on her desk.
"It was much more than a quirky concept," she says of "Something Ancient" by recent Purdue MFA graduate Brian Beglin. "The piece is surprisingly persuasive, even heart-wrenching. I passed it along to the fiction editor, who was equally enthusiastic. He took it for the May [Summer 2010] issue."
Very kind of all involved to mention the story. I'm delighted to be part of The Cincinnati Review, and even happier that Nicola and the wonderful CR staff are getting some well-earned attention from trade magazines like The Writer. It really is one of the best values for your litmag dollar.
